Newhaven College: David Williamson’s “Emerald City”

Set in 1987, Emerald City is a fast-paced, sharp-witted exploration of contemporary urban values, rivalries, and the passions that fuel the pursuit of success. Colin, a screenwriter, and Kate, a publisher, leave introspective and drizzly Melbourne to chase their dreams in the Emerald City – Sydney, where fame and fortune seem just within reach. However, as they navigate the cutthroat world of showbiz, they discover their journey to success is full of unexpected twists.
Written by one of Australia’s most renowned playwrights, David Williamson, Emerald City is a comedy rooted in realism and includes powerful, engaging monologues by the three lead characters. The play sharply reflects the complexities of human nature and the contradictions between tenderness, ambition, and vulnerability—both in its characters and in Williamson himself
