3) Sandy Point, Beach Parade (Mon 7 July 10am-3pm): The Weed for Plant Exchange project. The Sandy Point Community Group, through its Habitat initiative, has developed a ‘Weed for Plant Exchange’ project which aims to eradicate invasive weeds and replace them with indigenous plants suitable for Sandy Point gardens. Through education and encouragement of our town residents, the aim is to remove invasive weed (such as gazania, agapanthus, Pittosporum, vinca, etc) and replace them with a suitable indigenous plant. These plants can thrive in sandy soil and will tolerate varying degrees of salinity and wind. They will help increase the biodiversity of the village and provide food and habitat for our local fauna. Weed eradication: Through awareness and education, inform our community (both residents and community organisations) to consider removing invasive weeds/trees and replace them with more suitable indigenous plants. Areas to target would include private property (residents), roadside reserves and garden surrounds of community assets (Surf Club, CFA Shed, beach access tracks and farm paddocks adjacent to our town perimeter. Extend the Manna Gum corridor: Replace non-indigenous trees with Manna Gums to extend the corridor throughout the Sandy Point township to support our local koala population. Note: some sites would be suitable for wheelchair access. https://treeday.planetark.org/site/10030966
4) Ventnor, Phillip Island (Sun 27 Jul 10am-2pm): The Phillip Island Landcare Group are supporting landholders Helen and Tim to plant 1000 Indigenous trees, shrubs and groundcovers to form a Wildlife corridor of vegetation linking up to prominent existing corridors. The close proximity to Penguin Parade, Swan Lake and Green Lake means this site will provide a safe passage for many birds, mammals and reptiles, between nearby sites of vegetation significance. https://treeday.planetark.org/site/10031032
Established in 1996, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. The program is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.
Each year, around 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate Australians about the world around them. While every day can be Tree Day, we dedicate celebration of Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day to the last Friday and last Sunday in July.
The last Friday in July is dedicated to Schools Tree Day. Each year, thousands of schools participate nationwide in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them. Activities range from planting bush tucker gardens, building habitat for native wildlife, nature play and more.
While every day can be Tree Day, we dedicate celebration of Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day to the last Friday and last Sunday in July.
Trees are natural carbon sequesters – meaning they absorb and capture carbon from our atmosphere. The timber they produce is also an important, environmentally friendly building material because it stores carbon and is a renewable resource. So it’s important we continue to plant trees and look after our natural environment.
Being in nature is also good for your health and wellbeing! Having a dedicated day to plant a tree (or more) gets us all out and into our beautiful landscapes.
